Our Clean Team celebrated World Environment Day by partnering with River Cleanup and Rotary International to take action to #endplasticsoup. Volunteers picked up over a half a ton of trash in Santa Rosa, Healdsburg, Sebastopol, Guerneville and Monte Rio. They then made a difference for World Oceans Day by literally scaling a cliff on the Sonoma coast with B-rad Foundation and Coast Walk to remove over 500 pounds of trash.

Trash travels throughout the Russian River and its creeks to the ocean where it accumulates on beaches and within giant marine gyres. Once in the water, it breaks down into smaller pieces that harm fish and animals that mistake it for food. And it ruins a day on the beach for residents and tourists, and the local businesses that depend on clean water.

You can help! Pick up trash on your walks, runs, bike rides and paddles this summer by bringing a pair of gloves and a bag, taking a selfie or picture of the trash, posting it to Instagram or Facebook, and tagging @russianriverkeepercleanteam. Please keep yourself and others safe by practicing social distancing and wearing a mask.
