Frequently Asked Questions
The Russian River flows through Sonoma County in Northern California, starting in Mendocino County and emptying into the Pacific Ocean near Jenner.
HABs occur when algae, particularly cyanobacteria (blue-green algae), proliferate rapidly in water bodies due to factors like high temperatures and elevated nutrients. While algae are naturally present, certain species can produce toxins harmful to humans and animals.
HABs often appear as:
- Foamy, scummy, or thick like paint
- Colors ranging from pea-green, blue-green, to brownish-red
- Floating mats or scum along the shorelines with the water
