February marks the start of Black History Month, a federally recognized celebration of the contributions African Americans have made to this country and a time to reflect on the continued struggle for racial justice. With it comes many opportunities to continue cultural growth, understanding, and action for a more just world. We must decolonize the way we see the world for all to live fairly within it. That’s why we’ve compiled this list of special events.

Feb. 12, 9am: School for Environment and Sustainability, Black History Month Speaker

Heather McTeer Toney addresses how we must embrace climate action as the social justice issue of our time, and tear down old stereotypes-so that we can build sustainable and resilient alliances to fight effectively together, and affirm our common humanity.

Join the California Museum in discussion with activist, author & public historian Michelle Duster for Black History Month. First 100 free, $5 after.

Feb. 25, 2021, 3:30pm-5pm: Black Faces White Spaces Discussion

Check out the book Black Faces, White Spaces – Reimagining the relationship of African Americans to the Great Outdoors by Carolyn Finney to learn more about increasing access and removing barriers to outdoor opportunities for People of Color. Feb.27, 2021, 6:30pm-8:30pm: Petaluma Blacks for Community Development, Creating Family: Black History Month

This year, Petaluma Blacks for Community Development will celebrate Black History Month virtually and you’re invited! Created in collaboration with Petaluma Historical Library & Museum, Petaluma Arts Center, and the City of Petaluma, this year’s program provides a rich tapestry of perspectives for exploring the black family in past and present America.
