Job Posting: Restoration Field Tech

Job Overview
The Restoration Field Tech reports to the Restoration and Education Director and works independently, as well as with other staff, contractors and volunteers to manage and maintain restoration project sites. The Restoration Field Technician works on various projects, including riparian restoration, invasive species removal, native plant restoration and similar tasks. This is an entry-level, full-time position.

About Us: Russian Riverkeeper (RRK) is celebrating 31 years of dedicated advocacy, protection, and restoration of the Russian River and its watershed. Our mission is to protect and restore our watershed environment for the benefit of current and future generations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct invasive plant removal using hand or power tools such as loppers, chainsaws, brush cutters, string trimmers, and woodchippers, as well as safe use of herbicides. Maintain work tools, equipment, and storage areas to ensure tools and equipment are well organized and stored safely.
  • Drive company vehicles to and from work sites, including using 4-wheel drive trucks, trailers, and other towed equipment.
    Under direct supervision, aid in conducting plant surveys and vegetation monitoring.
  • Perform occasional debris and trash removals associated with river cleanup projects.
  • Assist with volunteer workdays, supervising and supporting volunteers.
  • Assist restoration director with project planning and documentation.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks and field labor throughout the work week (e.g., cutting, hauling, digging, equipment use, etc.), walk over rough terrain, and lift 70 lbs.
  • Ability to work in variable weather conditions typically experienced in Sonoma and southern Mendocino County.
  • This job’s specific vision abilities include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus; ability to see and respond to dangerous situations.
  • The noise level in the work environment ranges from quiet to loud, depending on equipment use.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Associate degree in Biology, Environmental Science, Natural Resources Management, or closely related fields plus two or more years of related work experience; or three (3) years of work experience in the key responsibilities list.
  • Ability to work independently and maintain a positive working relationship with other team members.
  • Valid Class C Driver’s License and clean driving record.
  • Ability to perform physical tasks and labor outdoors in variable weather conditions.
  • Attention to detail and ability to follow directions and implement procedures.
  • Demonstrated desire and passion to work to improve our environment.
  • Basic understanding of ecological principles.
  • Reliable transportation to and from the RRK office and job sites during scheduled workdays. Mileage reimbursement will be provided for the use of personal vehicles for job-related travel.
  • A DMV and criminal history check is required before employment.

Desired Qualifications

  • Proficiency in the safe driving of full-sized work trucks and hauling trailers.
  • Basic mechanical knowledge; confidence in operating, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing small equipment and tools in the field.
  • Knowledge of California fauna, flora, and ecosystems.
  • Proficiency with using email and basic computer programs.
  • Understanding and commitment to Russian Riverkeeper’s mission.\
  • Ability to read, write, and speak in English and Spanish at a conversational level.

Compensation
This is a full-time 32-40 hour per week position. The starting rate is $25 per hour with vacation, sick time, health, and other employee benefits.
